Tuna Pasta Bake

Ingredients

Whole wheat pasta

Tin of chopped tomatoes

Tomato puree

Leek

Red onion

Cheddar cheese

Yellow pepper

Oregano

Salt and pepper

A little oil or butter

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C
  2. Boil a pan of water and add pasta-cook until just done (12 minutes)

  3. Meanwhile, chop the onion, leek and pepper.

  4. Fry the onion and add the leek and pepper.

  5. Drain the tin of tuna and add to the fried mixture.

  6. Add a teaspoon of oregano.

  7. Add the chopped tomatoes, a tablespoon of tomato puree and season to taste. Stir well.

  8. Drain the pasta and add to a large ovenproof dish.

  9. Pour in the tuna mixture and stir well.

10. Grate some cheese and sprinkle (or cover!) over the tuna pasta.

11. Bake in the oven until the cheese starts to brown.

The children this week had great fun chopping the vegetables and grating the cheese.  The older ones were able to stir the food as it was cooking.  The children were very positive on the whole about the dish (only two did not like tuna) but other comments were, "It's the best pasta I have ever tasted!"  "It's delicious!" and "I am going to make that for my Mum at home."

We made posters to stick up around school to ask people to pick up their dog dirt and use litter bins.  We are then going to be spending the next few sessions litter picking around our school grounds!
