At Griffin Park, the intention of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is to develop pupils’ curiosity, confidence and enjoyment in learning other languages. Through the teaching of French, pupils are given regular opportunities to listen attentively and speak with increasing confidence, recognising that successful language learning begins with oracy. Alongside this, pupils learn how language works and gradually build secure foundations for future language study.

Our French curriculum is carefully structured and progressive, with vocabulary and sentence structures revisited and extended over time. Pupils also develop intercultural understanding by learning about everyday life in France and the wider Francophone world, making meaningful comparisons with their own experiences and building cultural capital. French is taught weekly to all pupils in Key Stage 2 through a discrete lesson, while children in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are introduced to other languages informally through songs, counting, greetings and cross-curricular links.
