Multiplication Tables Check
Knowledge of the times tables is a vital part of every child's education. Learning times table facts of by heart is essential for the transition to upper key stage 2 where division, fractions, decimals, percentages and algebra are secured. Children who know their times tables facts will be able to answer questions more quickly and be able to focus on using other mathematical strategies in more complex problems rather than being slowed down by multiplication. Knowing time tables can also increase confidence levels as this particular part of the question becomes easy.
Multiplication Table Check (MTC)
In 2020 the Government introduced a statutory multiplication check for all pupils in year 4. Your child will need to take a short online test to make sure their times tables knowledge is at the expected level.
What is the check?
The MTC is an online test for pupils in Year 4. Pupils are asked to answer 25 questions on times tables from two to 12. They are given six seconds per question, with three seconds rest between each question, so the test should last less than five minutes.
When is the check going to happen?
Schools must administer the multiplication tables check within the period between Monday 2nd June and Friday 13th June 2025.
